Here at St. Mary's we make our own scapulars and have them available in our Gift Shop for a donation.
The Brown Scapular, once one of the greatest devotional treasures of the Church, has been largely forgotten by the world. The aim of the Scapular Apostolate is to reawaken this simple and most profound devotion in the lives of Catholics everywhere, by making and distributing affordable scapulars. In 1251 Our Lady of Mount Carmel handed the Scapular to St. Simon Stock and promised ‘peace and protection’ to those who devoutly wear the Brown Scapular during their life. She further promised to remain with them and be a ‘shield in times of danger’, the greatest danger to our souls is sin and its
consequences. The faithful need the Brown Scapular now more than ever! We must do all in our power to promote this ‘shield’, to help others remain in a state of grace, and ultimately assist them on their journey to Heaven.
The Brown Scapular is a sacramental in the Church and a daily reminder of your devotion to Our Lady and her care for you each day. *A sacramental is a sacred sign which, through the prayers of the Church, prepares the soul to receive grace. All souls need our help, we have been given a gift we must share with the world! This is true Christian Charity, to help others save their souls forever!
In the scriptures it says, I believed therefore I spoke. Let’s labor under the mantle of Mary for The Glory of God and the salvation of souls. We have to go to Mary and then it is easier to go to Jesus. “Da per martem me venire” - To Jesus through Mary - Truly this scapular is a gift from heaven, a privileged way of life and a thing of rare beauty. Our Lady told St. Simon: “To be clothed in it means you are continually thinking of me, and I in turn, am always thinking of you and helping you to secure eternal life. In sports, we wear the jersey of our favorite team to support them, and the owner of that team is be pleased by it. In the same way, when we put on the garment of Our Lady, the ‘garment of grace,’ we become members of Mary’s team; we follow the Star of the Sea through life to shore (Heaven). By wearing the Brown Scapular we are inviting
her into our lives more profoundly- letting her take action to help us and she is pleased by this and so is her Son — ‘behold your Mother’. The fruits of the Scapular are immense, as the Catholic Encyclopedia reminds us: “Whoever, therefore, even though he be now a sinner, wears the badge of the Mother of God throughout life as her faithful
servant, not presumptuously relying on the scapular as on a miraculous amulet, but trustfully confiding in the power and goodness of Mary, may securely hope that Mary will through her powerful and motherly intercession procure for him all the necessary graces for true conversion and for perseverance in good. Such is the meaning and importance of the first privilege of the Carmelite Scapular: “Whosoever dies wearing the brown Scapular will not suffer the eternal fire.”
Our Lady, Cause of our Joy, pray for us!
